The Location

We visited Mary Street Bakery in Highgate recently while Mr15 was having surgery at a private hospital nearby. We couldn’t stay and wait so asked the nurses for a recommendation for coffee and breakfast to pass the time while trying not to stress out. Mary Street Bakery was their recommendation and said they often get coffees delivered on Uber Eats as it’s their favourite in the area.

Nestled on Beaufort Street, Mary Street Bakery in Highgate is one of those effortlessly cool Perth institutions. The vibe is relaxed yet buzzing — think industrial-chic interiors, friendly chatter bouncing off the walls, and a steady stream of locals having early morning meetings, grabbing takeaway coffees or friends catching up and settling in for a long, lazy brunch.

If you’re new to Perth, the Highgate area is a great spot to get familiar with to the city’s popular café scene. It’s central enough to be accessible from most suburbs, yet still has that laid-back, neighbourhood feel. You’re only a few minutes from the city, Northbridge, or Mount Lawley, which makes it a perfect weekend pit stop after a bit of exploring or shopping.

Free parking is plentiful on residential streets nearby, but please be respectful of people’s driveways and make sure you note the time constraints – most off-street parking around the area is 2 hours only. Plenty of time to enjoy a coffee, brekkie and a quick stroll around the shops.

The Food

If you’re a brunch lover like me (and who isn’t?), you’ll be in heaven here. The menu is compact but full of personality, offering a mix of classics and creative twists that make deciding what to order a real challenge.

I went for the scrambled eggs with chives on buttered toast, and it was everything you want in a breakfast dish — simple, perfectly seasoned, and impossibly fluffy. There’s something deeply comforting about a plate of perfectly done scrambled eggs, and Mary Street Bakery absolutely nails it. I’m not a fan of overcooked or undercooked scrambled eggs, and these were absolutely perfect for me.

Mr C went for the bap with bacon, fried egg, and chilli jam (minus the HP sauce). The soft roll held together beautifully, the bacon was quite crispy (I love crispy bacon, Mr C less so), and the chilli jam added that perfect touch of sweetness and heat. It’s one of those dishes that sounds basic but delivers big flavours.

The portion sizes are spot on too — generous enough to fill you up, but not so big that you leave regretting that “just one more bite.” Whether you’re a savoury breakfast person or have a sweet tooth, there’s something for everyone here.

The menu has a range of all-day dishes including everything from cheese on toast to fried chicken, and steak sandwiches, available from 7am to 2pm, 7 days a week. So, you’re sure to find something to suit everyone at the table.

The Coffee

If coffee is a non-negotiable part of your morning, you’ll be pleased to know that Mary Street Bakery takes it seriously. Like, really seriously. Their coffee was excellent — smooth, well-balanced, and full of flavour without the bitterness you sometimes get elsewhere from over roasted beans.

We both went for almond lattes, and honestly, they were some of the best we’ve had in Perth. The milk was perfectly textured, the coffee strong and rich, and it arrived at that perfect drinkable temperature (you know the one — hot enough to warm your hands, but cool enough that you don’t have to wait ten minutes before your first sip).

There’s a reason Perth has a national reputation for having one of the best coffee scenes in the world, and places like Mary Street Bakery are a big part of that. Whether you’re popping in for a quick caffeine hit on your way to work or settling in for a slow weekend brunch, I’m sure that the coffee here will never disappoint.

The Bakery

You can’t come to Mary Street Bakery without at least thinking about taking home something from the bakery counter. Even if you arrive full of good intentions, the sight of those pastries will test every ounce of your willpower. Doughnuts dusted in sugar, buttery croissants, glossy tarts, and flaky pastries line the display — and they’re as good as they look.

Everything is baked fresh daily, and you can absolutely taste the difference. The pastry is light, buttery, and perfectly golden, while the fillings range from classic custards and jams to more inventive flavour combinations. The doughnuts in particular have achieved almost cult status in Perth — pillowy, rich, and ridiculously moreish.

There’s something really special about being able to grab a loaf of sourdough or a pastry to take home after breakfast. It’s the kind of simple pleasure that makes a weekend feel a bit more indulgent.

I grabbed a selection of doughnuts, pastries and brownies to take back to the nursing team and hospital staff who were all amazing looking after Mr 15 (and me!) that day. They all seemed to enjoy them and it was just a little token of thanks for their kind care on the day.

It’s got all the ingredients of a perfect breakfast experience — great food, excellent coffee, friendly service, and that warm, buzzy atmosphere that makes you want to linger a little longer.

Whether you’re a new arrival still exploring the café scene or a long-time local looking for your next favourite brunch spot, it’s a place that feels both familiar and special. You can come in your activewear after a walk around Hyde Park or dress up for a catch-up with friends — it just works for any kind of morning.
