When it comes to things to do in Perth, the list can seem never ending. But now there’s an exciting new experience you need to add to your Perth bucket list – riding a bike on the Swan River with Perth Waterbike Adventures.
Perth Waterbike Adventures has just launched (excuse the pun) at Matilda Bay on the banks of the beautiful Swan River. Owner Vicky Forbes has been hard at work for the last few months to bring this unique attraction to our city.
The Story Behind Perth Waterbike Adventures
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Vicky is a true lover of the bush, sea, rivers and lakes. Growing up she spent a lot of her time on the mighty Zambezi River and Kariba Dam.
Her roots are as firmly planted in South Africa as well as Zimbabwe, as she shares, “My Mom was born in Cape Town, and we still have family there. We moved to South Africa as I was finishing school. It’s a part of my tapestry as much as Zimbabwe is. They’re both countries that I’ll always hold very dear to my heart.”
Vicky moved to Perth with her son and had been searching for a business idea that could not only provide an income but also feed her soul. Having been involved in the tourism industry for years and an avid water lover, it seems that she found her perfect match when she discovered waterbikes.
“I started following Cape Town Waterbikes, and then got onto following other waterbike businesses internationally. I did all the research and saw the success of other waterbike businesses all over the world, (including Europe on the lakes). It’s a popular and fun activity that’s gaining more and more popularity. It’s sustainable. And importantly, it’s on the water, which is where I love being the most. I then found the bikes I have and saw how successful they are. That was the birth of Perth Waterbike Adventures.”
The Perth Waterbike Adventures Experience
I must admit I was a little nervous hopping on the waterbike. I’m not a huge fan of cycling on land, (give me a horse over a bike anyday!) and wasn’t sure what it would be like on water.
Once I was on, it was so easy! You really didn’t have to put in much effort to start moving and keep going.
We tried both versions of the bikes – there’s a standard bicycle seat option and a reclining bike option too. The recliner was my favourite but even the standard bike was easy enough to ride (just not as handy for taking photos).
We cycled around the boat ramp area until we got our sea legs and then took a leisurely cycle down to the Crawley Boat Shed and back. People were watching us as we passed by, and a few stopped us to ask how to hire them as well.
We saw loads of the river’s most famous residents, the black swans, along with a host of different birds and tons of jellyfish.
The views across to the city are just spectacular and great to take in from the water.
