We took a trip last summer after waiting over a year for the best possible weather and boy were we rewarded. The day we chose was absolutely still, not a breath of wind, and stunning sunshine. Quirky Tour #7 – Pinnacles, Sandboarding, Wildlife & Lobster – Explore Tours Perth

Experience four of the best activities the region has to offer, all in one unforgettable day. Starting off at the Yanchep National Park, you get up really close and personal with koalas, view Western Grey kangaroos grazing around the lake while an abundance of native bird species fly overhead among the woodlands and wetlands. You then head north to the fishing village of Cervantes, for a tour through a crayfish processing plant and a scrumptious lunch at the Lobster Shack.

After lunch you’ll be transported to the lunar-like landscape of the Nambung National Park to view the Pinnacles, weird limestone formations, some reaching four metres high, formed by seashells and sculptured by nature over thousands of years. Before heading back to Perth, you stop at Lancelin and get to climb the towering snow-white sand dunes for breathtaking views of the coastline, and have the opportunity to “surf” down the dunes aboard specially designed sandboards.  A truly magical experience.

Quirky Tour #9 – Nature Night Walk – Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary

Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary, hardly an hour out of Perth, allows one to experience the Australian bush as it was over 200 years ago. Having removed all foreign animals and erecting a vermin-proof fence, has provided a safe haven for the critically endangered Woylies, Western Ringtail Posums, the rare Quenda and the once declared extinct, Tamar Wallabies.

As these creatures are mostly nocturnal, the only time to observe them is after dark when they come out to forage on the forest floor. A guided night walk through the sanctuary offers a unique experience to view these secretive creatures as well as a variety of bird species. The 3 kilometre walk takes about 2 hours with regular stops to learn about this habitat.

It’s advisable to wear sturdy and comfortable shoes, long sleeved clothing and bring mosquito repellent.

We’ve done this walk twice now with family and friends, and it’s absolutely one of the best tours we have done in Perth.

Cost: $20 for adults – $15 for children and concession holders – and $60 for families (2 adults and 2 children) with all funds going to conserving this sanctuary.

If you’re feeling adventurous, are physically fit and weigh under 140 kgs, can climb and paddle a boat in confined spaces 20 metres underground, not afraid of the dark and don’t suffer from claustrophobia, the Fremantle Prison Tunnels Tour may just be the thing for you.

A guide will lead you on foot and by boat through a labyrinth of tunnels and submerged passageways, carved out by the prisoners themselves, discovering original blast holes and artefacts left behind by the work gangs. An eerie but such an exciting adventure, lasting two and a half hours.

Oh, remember that they ask you to please arrive sober for this one!
