How often have you wanted to send gifts to family and friends in South Africa and not been able to find what you want? There are plenty of options for gifting online but often they’re big corporate brands like Woolworths and Interflora and it’s harder to find those personalised gifting experiences that really hit the mark.
I’m super excited to share a brand new gifting company in South Africa with you – The Gift Box Co. It’s a family business which aims to help South Africans overseas send beautiful and thoughtful gifts back to loved ones in South Africa.
To find out more about the business I chatted to the owner of The Gift Box Co, Debby Margarites.
The Gift Box Co
Debby is originally from Pietermaritzburg but lived in the UK for many years. It was here where she met her husband Paul (who’s from Johannesburg!). Over the years they’ve lived in the UK, South Africa, and Australia, often moving due to Paul’s work. With family on both sides still living in Australia, they feel a strong connection to the country and visit as often as they can.
The Gift Box Co was born in late 2018, and the idea came from Debby’s own personal experiences of putting together gift boxes for her friends and family in SA during the time she lived in the UK. When she lived in the UK, she used to put together a personalised gift box of pressies for special occasions and post them to South Africa, instead of just sending one gift or a card.
Knowing how it feels to have family and friends scattered all over the world, it was a challenge that Debby understood and wanted to find a solution to on her return to South Africa.
The name of the business was inspired by her daughter. The Gift Box Co is simple, elegant and does exactly what it says – create a beautiful box filled with natural local sourced products to create a gift that makes a lasting impression. The gift box itself is their signature; it’s just the content that changes depending on the occasion.
What Debby loves the most though, is sourcing the contents of each box. She loves finding people all over South Africa making beautiful products. While some of the brands in their gift boxes are household names (Carroll Boyes for example), she’s also making sure to find newer brands as well to truly showcase some of the amazing businesses and products on the market.
Some of the brands they have uncovered so far include a man making amazing, natural beard products in Wellington, a woman hand making baby clothes in Howick, and a family business producing bamboo products in Hillcrest who is now really taking off locally.
Some of their customers are even asking for more information on their suppliers so they’re planning to feature a different supplier each month on their blog – so watch this space if you love discovering new businesses in South Africa to shout about.
When Debby and her husband Paul aren’t working, you’ll likely find them spending time exploring their new surrounds in Stellenbosch, having recently relocated there. With wine farms, mountains and plenty of open space for the kids to run around, I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend myself!
Send Gifts To Family & Friends In South Africa With The Gift Box Co
Many of us have the idea to send our own gift boxes to loved ones in South Africa but with the high cost and infamous unreliability of the South African postal service, often our parcels don’t arrive intact, or even at all.
The Gift Box Co takes the stress and hassle out of the equation, by sourcing gorgeous (often handmade) local products and delivering them right to the recipient’s door in South Africa.
In the few short months they’ve been going, the business has taken off and despite thinking it would be a small family-run operation, Debby has had to hire people to help her. Which is great not just for her, but also the local community in Stellenbosch.
The Gift Box Co has a range of boxes for all occasions and recipients. From mums, dad, and teens, to housewarming, new baby and sympathy gifts, you’re sure to find a box that’s right for your loved one.
