If adventure racing is your thing, you’re going to love this post! I was recently contacted by a South African now living in Perth, Ellen Allardice, who has started a business organising adventure race tours to South Africa. She’s putting together her first adventure race tour to South Africa to do the SANI2C – a 3 day mountain bike race in Kwa-Zulu Natal in May 2018.
Ellen is originally from Durban but has been in Australia for over 8 years now. Ellen and her family had the opportunity to move to Perth and took it, as they already had immediate family living here. I spoke to Ellen to find out more about her migration journey and what made her want to start organising adventure race tours.
Why did you decide to organise a tour to do the SANI2C?
I love to challenge myself and I love to travel so I thought (and hoped!) that there must be more people out there who would want to experience similar adventures of combining the two! I started with Sani2C as I am familiar and have had experience with the race, it is brilliantly organised, it takes you through 265km of the some of the most picturesque parts of South Africa and it is an amazing South African cultural experience.
Have you done races like this before? What motivates you to do them?
Yes, I’ve done mountain bike races, road bike races, running races both on road and trail, swimming races and triathlons. As I said, I love to challenge myself and I feel anyone can do anything, it’s just a case of deciding you can!
I’m not really sure what motivates me – I suppose the feeling of setting your mind to something and then achieving it, is motivation in itself. I’ve only done races in South Africa and Australia so I do hope to venture beyond those orders at some point!
Tell us more about the tour.
The tour includes 6 nights in South Africa. The race is a partner event so it is a requirement that participants travel in pairs. Sani2C is a sought after event and as a result, it is difficult to get an entry. Included in the tour is guaranteed race entry, 3 nights race (tented) accommodation, 3 nights hotel accommodation (3-4 star), a tour up Sani Pass to the highest pub in Africa, all transport to and from JHB airport as well as all meals (except for 2 lunches and 1 dinner). So there isn’t much that isn’t included.
The tour is targeted at mountain bikers of any ability – from novice to advanced. There are nine months until the race so there is more than enough time for a rider of any capability to get themselves race ready!
There are options to extend the trip too, possibly add on a safari…but that is up to the individual participants.
The cost of the tour is estimated at $1890pp twin share (this price may vary due to currency fluctuations).
International flights and travel insurance are not included but I am able to assist in this regard.
What are your plans for your adventure racing tour business?
I’d like to start by offering various tours in South Africa – in the areas of both cycling and running, once again, only because I am familiar with these events. But following that, well the sky is the limit – as long as I can find people to join us on the adventure we’ll plan a tour around it! Suggestions more than welcome!
Anything else you want to share?
“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us” (anonymous). There is such amazing stuff to see, do and experience in this world, this is a way we can all get a piece of it! Magic happens when you are pushed out of your comfort zone – that is all I aim to help people achieve!
